The lecture will focus on major cultural and social transformations in Tunisian society through an analysis of the position of olive cultivation in relation to development in the aftermath of independence. This is elaborated through shifts in the role of olives from the local and traditional economy towards the market based and global. This represents a shift in the structures of production and its’ methods in addition to the organization of work, its’ social components, forms of consumption, and the symbols of production in society and culture.
