Jamil Hillal and others. Nader Said (ed.); Hadeel Qazzaz (research coordinator).Ramallah: Birzeit University, Development Studies Programme 1998

This study is the result of discussions conducted by a group of Palestinian researchers to explore the concept of human development and its application in the case of Palestine, and to innovate ways to reflect the state of development in Palestine in comparison with other countries in the world. Four papers are presented in this book: The first paper is entitled “Human Development : International and Country Experiences, and Palestinian Directions”, and presents a historical and theoretical background on the concept of human development. The second paper is entitled “Conceptual and Methodological Dimensions in the Study of Human Development in Palestine”, and presents a historical perspective of the issues, with a focus on health, education and economy. The third paper is entitled “Sustainable Human Development and its Implications on Planning and Studying Development in Palestine,” and addresses the conceptual and methodological complexities involved in the study of human development studies in the case of Palestine. The last paper is entitled “Reflections on Measuring Human Development in Palestine,” and discusses the concept and the indicators, suggesting additional indicators appropriate for use in the Palestinian case.
